5 Facts about memory...you probably knew and then forgot!
1. Your brain is signaled to forget when walking through a doorway.
Every wonder why you always seem to foget why you walked in a room? Well you can blame the doorway studies show. "Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an 'event boundary' in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away," said lead researcher Gabriel Radvansky, a psychologist at the University of Notre Dame. "Recalling the decision or activity that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized." Crossing a threshold signals the end of a “scene” and causes memory lapses. This is even true of mental doorways. So beware of houses with too many doorways!
2. Short term memory is very short
Ever think youre listening to someone and then immediately forget the directions you were given? Well blame your short term memory. Short term memory last about 20 to 30 seconds.
3. Closing your eyes can help you remember things.
When you are trying to recall information studies have shown that people were 23 percent more likely to remember detail of a movie they just watched when closing their eyes. So give it a try next time you are taking a test or in need of recalling some important information!
4. Not all lies are remembered equally
Some lies are easier to remember. If is harder to remember a lie that is a denial of something that happened because our mind has to keep constraints on the lie and truth. It is easier to remember a completely made up lie that was invented in our minds with false descriptions and elaborate details.
5. Excercise helps you remember new information
We know excersice is important for our physical health but it is also important for our mental health including our ability to remember new information.
